COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL THERAPY FOR INSOMNIA (CBT-i)
What is CBT-i
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-i) is a structured treatment for persistent insomnia, including difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep or early waking. It aims to modify behaviours and sleep patterns that can maintain insomnia over time as well as address sleep-related worries. CBT-i aims to improve sleep by changing maintaining factors that keep the sleep problem going, well after the initial trigger (eg stress) may have passed.
HOW DOES IT WORK
CBT-i involves assessing a person's sleep patterns, routines, beliefs about sleep and factors that may be interfering with rest. Treatment commonly includes a number of behavioural changes, which helps rebuild the association between bed and sleep; and cognitive strategies to address worry related to poor sleep.
CBT-i is a short-term intervention, typically lasting 6 to 8 weekly sessions. It is an intensive intervention that does require a significant commitment of daily behavioural change practice during this period, and clients considering engaging in CBT-i should be mindful that they have the capacity to participate fully during the treatment.
CBT-i is recommended as a first-line treatment for adults with chronic insomnia, including difficulties that occur alongside depression, anxiety, chronic pain and other health conditions.
WHERE DOES IT COME FROM
CBT-i was developed from behavioural treatments for insomnia introduced in the 1960s and 1970s, particularly stimulus control and sleep restriction. Cognitive approaches were subsequently incorporated to address the worry, expectations and beliefs that can perpetuate sleep difficulties. Research over several decades has established CBT-i as an effective treatment for chronic insomnia and is distinct from general sleep hygiene advice alone.
